I was told when I picked up my car in Bowling Green, that all you need to break in anymore is the gears in the rear. Just vary the speed for 500 miles so they don't wear at one speed. Engines are good to go.

That's what it says in the manual. Sounded like it was mostly for the gears too.

Simple. Break-in is designed for maximum engine performance. Synthetic oil is designed to prevent "jerks" from blowing up the engines under warranty. They put it in to help the engine last (fewer warranty issues), not to help it perform.

rev it up to 5000-6000rpm and ever so slowly ease the clutch out to a smooth takeaway. thats how I do it, thats how my father does it, thats how America does it, and its worked pretty good so far.

p.s. don't do that.

Now days the rings seat almost completely the first time its turned on and warmed up, and if they don't, they never will. By the time your car hits the dealer the engine is almost completely broken in. Modern technology allows for a manufacturer to make the bore, pistons, and rings almost perfectly sized and shaped, so there is no need for an extensive break in like in the old days. Thats also why you have vehicles that can be factory filled with synthetic oils, having to use conventional oil to break in a motor in is a non-issue.

The 500 mile recommendation is more for the diff to break in than anything else.

I did a 500"ish" break-in on the LS1 in my 04 GTO and that car still ran as strong as day one when I turned it in (Smartbuy) after 4 years and 57k miles.

One thing to keep in mind for those who have never done a break-in before. It is VERY important that the break-in occur throughout the rpm ranges. DO NOT set the car on cruise at 65 on the highway and go to the next state and back and think you accomplished anything...

5000 miles...

5000 miles

There isn't a chance in hell I'd keep out of an accelerator for 5000 miles.

We are all pretty sure you are mistaken

This is a good read around engine break in. It comes from the ZDDPlus website which of course is trying to sell their product but it does explain the difference between today's roller lifter engines and the older flat tappet lifter engines.

There is a lot of misconception about break in. First off there is more to break in on a new car than just the engine. Second synthetic oil will not have any negative effects on break in. Synthetic is not a better lubricant. The oil film in the engine is the same thickness according to it's weight.
Third GM's standard is 500 miles for the vehicle break in this 5000 number more than likley came from the ls engine's making more power and getting better milage after about 5k.

I don't know why Blur didn't chime in, but in a old thread he recommended this method. http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I sell synthetic lubes and these days you can run synthetic right from the factory. It is still a good idea to break it in carefully at least 500 to 1000 miles to be sure. The ring and engine technology these days if far supior to years ago. With a GOOD synthetic you will not really have any wear to speak of. Use the cheap stuff from the factory and move on to the best you can find on the market. The Vet guys pick up about 3 to 4 MPG switching to my favorite lubes. Look into it for better protection, longevity, mileage and oif course more HP. If you rebuild an engine it matters on how much cross hatch you put in the cylinders. You think any Nascar or Pro Stock guys break in an engine for 5000 before they hammer it? Think about it.
