What should I do about this warranty situation (alternate vehicle)
So I took my Prius into the shop for warranty work. I have an extended warranty I paid for when I purchased. The issue is, I was receiving an error stating “Cooling performance of Hybrid Battery is low”. I took it to Toyota because no other local shop would touch a Hybrid battery. They told me it would actually be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. So the dealer didn’t use my extended warranty or charge me. My extended warranty of course has a deductible.
They repair my car and return it to me no charge. Well… about 2 weeks later I get a phone call with a voice mail and text from the dealer asking for my extended warranty information because they made a mistake and found out that the part and repair wasn’t covered by the standard warranty. I told them that the repair had to do with the cooling of the Hybrid Battery which heavily effects the powertrain. They stated the service tech likely made the same assumption and continued to ask for my extended warranty… Should I provide them with that? |

How hard you want to fight them will depend on how much the deductible is, and if making a claim against it would reduce your ability to make a future claim. Either way, I would ask them for evidence that Toyota denied the warranty claim first, since it goes against what you were originally told.

What year do you have. I thought they came with 8 year warranty and the battery was under for 10 years. The service manager would have been the one to make the call that it was under warranty not the mechanic and I also assume at some point in time they contacted the factory because I have never heard of a dealer doing warranty work without factory permission. This whole thing is a little shady.

Would have never even been an issue if you had gone for the corolla or camry instead. The only economical hybrid worth buying are diesel hybrids, and they are not sold in the United States because they are 10× more efficient than any other vehicle sold here and that would put every car make out of business in this country, including Tesla. The fuel vendors wouldn't be very happy financially about your 200+ miles per gallon efficiency either.

Why not provide them the extended warranty coverage to keep you from having to pay the bill! I see nothing fishy about the request from the dealership.

I've worked in a dealership for 20 years of my life. Never have I ever heard about calling the customer back 2 weeks after the repairs are completed asking for compensation. If Toyota denied their claims, it could be for MANY many reasons. Heck, if they didn't return a part that Toyota asked for, the coverage would be denied to the dealership. That has nothing to do with you.
You're A-OK. Don't bother letting them go through your warranty. You're good. You've got your car back and even got signed paperwork stating that everything was covered. You're set.

Warranty claims, especially for something seemingly like this, would commonly be submitted for approval before the work begins. Ask them to provide you with a contact at Toyota corporate and your claim number to speak with them directly. If Toyota confirms the claim was denied, ask for a written explanation as to why.

Thanks for the replies thus far. I’ve been extremely busy with work and haven’t had much time to monitor the forums so sorry for the late reply and mis-posting this in the general forums. I just generally don’t get a lot of free time to post so when I do I just do quick hit and runs.
As for the situation at hand, this is what happened: I haven’t heard anything back since I requested tangible evidence from Toyota and it’s been a few days. |

He doesn't come across as being unreasonable, and he has also indicated that "the tech" apparently made the decision about how to submit it. I'd still say that this is "on them" at this point as you put forth the correct view about wanting to validate an issue before approving repair (this is typically how the manufacturer's warranty will work as well - you just never see it because the dealerships seldom have to reach out for a decision as the diagnosis tools are sufficient in most cases).
