You could easily find a home like you just described in the $90-100,000 price range.

I guess to give you some perspective, we are looking at spending around $180,000 and that will get us around 3,000 sq ft and anywhere from 1/8 acre to 3/4 acre.

For $400,000 you can get anywhere from 1600 sq feet on 3 acres of land to 6,100 sq ft on 1/3 of an acre....

Although i have to say that I feel your pain. One of the main reasons we moved from Chicago was the cost of living. We were looking for homes there and they were pretty close to what you are looking at although not quite that extreme. For a starter home you would be looking at about $300,000 in the suburbs and well into the $400's within the city with NO land.
