I agree with your points, however I don't see this from GM's point of view as a way to compete with Ford, but to control the aftermarket of their products while profiting at the same time.

It's not difficult to do this and some will ask why this isn't stock. Well it's cost for one and 2nd the failure rate will go up on a stock engine with increased power. So you then have to increase the cost of your content to a higher level to handle the added stress.

But a unique higher performance calibration can be developed with out a huge amount of work. But it is work and it would require testing and validation.

So would you pay $2,400 for a warranty covered 40 HP? I might if you can roll into the purchase price.

This is will be a limited market, but we'll see if GM responds.
There's definitely a desire for such things. I can tell you that a number of people who own Camaros and Corvettes would jump to buy from the factory a way to make the LT1 a 500 HP motor. (Raises hand!) C'mon New GM think outside the Old GM box!
