they aren't any worse for the motor that the factory ones..
though for "most" vehicles they add little more than noise.. Most OEM motors will not see any real gains from them, and those that do only see them in the high RPM band which is mostly useless for street driving.
now add a cam, heads, exhaust from the headers to the tail pipes, or any type of FI and yeah they offer some gains.
