2022 lt1 oil smells like gas
 

Hey guys did an oil change today after 3200 miles. Noticed an odor of gasoline in the oil? Something to be worried about and bring in or all good? Had close to 10 qt drain out fairly dark as I do have some short commute time. Car does get driven hard often to compensate for that. Thanks guys

My ZL1 oil ALWAYS smells like fuel. Its a byproduct of the DI high pressure fuel system so how I have heard. But its very common. I change mine about every 2-3k and the level is always perfect, so no worries.

If you do a lot of very short trips you may want to try decreasing your oil change interval...

Try taking a look at the engine oil temp in the DIC (not sure if the LT1 will show it, but usefull if it does) and drive the car long enough on some of your short trips to get the temp up to 200F, as that will help to boil off the condensated water and maybe burn off the excess fuel.

The engine water temp warms up way faster than the oil temp does, so while you think your engine is properly warmed up while looking at the small water temp gauge, that's really not the case - it takes a minimum of 15 minutes in summer and 20 minutes in colder months.

I would not feel good about gasoline smell in the oil, when do you smell it? on the stick when you pull it out and before you wipe it?

Yes, in the LT1 you can pull up oil temp. I will say it takes a while for the oil temp to equal the water temp in cooler temps.

No I smelled it todsy since I did an oil change. Never smelled the dipstick. Seems I’m getting some conflicting answers maybe I bring it in just to be safe. Car has been running great haven’t noticed any issues. As far as my temp the oil only ever gets over 200 if I’m starting to drive aggressive. Normal driving never goes over 188 even highway drives. Using 0w40 currently

My oil never goes to 200 in the winter. It could be that the motor just hasn't fully broke in yet.

You smelled it today while you were draining the oil ? or smelled your container that you drained the oil into ? either way, how strong was the stench of gas? BTW its normal to smell combustion or an exhaust smell in the oil. My oil temps never go beyond water temps either which is mid 180s.

Smelled container when I was done alway like to look at oil on paper towel to see anything out the ordinary .

Well, imo it would depend how strong the gasoline smell is . Like I indicated before, a burnt fuel or combustion smell is common, raw fuel smell ? see if you can detect the smell on the dipstick when you regularly check it during this next 3000 mile duration, make some notes on when you start to smell gas, at what mileage.

Maybe do a Blackstone oil analysis in a few thousand miles to see what they say?

The 200F for the oil was my reference normal temp for an SS 1LE. It's odd that we have different opperating temps for the same engine, while mine has the oil cooler and your LT1 presumably does not.

At any rate, if 180s is your normal, then make sure you get it up to running in the 180s for a bit before you shut it down. I'm assuming you'll find that short trips of <15 min don't get to 180F.
