2014 C7 Corvette to be 90 pounds lighter

Don't know if this has been posted but in this link it says the C7 will be 90 pounds lighter than past models. Will get 29 mpg highway.

"The C7 is one of 13 new Chevrolet products that will hit U.S. show rooms this year. Like many of the others, it arrives lighter than past models. Engineers said Sunday they had trimmed 90 pounds from the car, and used carbon fiber on even the base trim level."

"Pricing was not announced Sunday night, but it is expected the base model of the C7 will cost more than the $49,600 of the base C6 predecessor. Fuel economy is expected to reach 18 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway."

I thought the weight savings in the aluminum frame (99 lbs) were offset by additions for the revised engine and braking systems, along with other new features, netting the weight to be the same as the current car.

a final dry weight hasn't been announced yet by GM but yes, they knocked 45 kgs (99 lbs) out of the frame. We'll see what the actual weight is soon enough with production models........

99lbs out of the frame and 37lbs out of the body.
That's 136lbs out.
Some of that is added back in with more luxury materials in the interior, more tech gadgets, bigger brakes and stronger suspension.

If the final tally is 90lbs lighter, that's damn impressive! :)

Not just weight savings, but another significant gain is the 57% greater stiffness over the C6. That's a chassis worthy of robust strength, protection, durability and handling. :stingray:

This new lightweight yet uber strong all-aluminum cage was one of the auto show's feature showcase... GM spent $57 million on new tooling & upgrades specifically in the body/chassis shop in the BG plant. :c7:

Here's a cockpit shot I took the other day... :thumb:

Interesting stats, thanks.

This day in age, with the ever increasing safety standard requirements, new electronic technologies, and more upscale interior, any weight savings over previous generation models is laudible :clap2:

:amen: GM surely has a final weight now but they're not saying squat so I'm just hoping for near parity. Some speculation of 3,000 lbs is probably ridiculous but if it's close to that? It's going to be one damned fast car :D

Do you have an information source for that 37lbs out of the body? That's one number I've not readily seen publicized. And if your deduction is correct, the final weight savings would be excellent!

Now if only I could lose 90 lbs as well...

Its been announced, although GM is still trying to shave off weight. I think iit'll weigh roughly the same as the current gen, just much more efficient.
