Stingray v. "Corvette Coupe"?
Had anyone read the recent "MT Confidential" column in the latest Motor Trend (April 2013) where a lower-cost Corvette with a 5.3L V8 was supposedly in the works for model year 2015?
Is the latest attempt at the "Billy Bob" Corvette that has long been promised since 1997? :) Actually, I'd be very curious to see how a less than 400hp 5.3L-engined Vette would be positioned from a performance standpoint, especially compared to the current "base" model. Motor Trend writers might be out of their minds though! |
Take everything MotorTrend says with a grain of salt.

It would be interesting. GM has had a history of sharing truck engines with cars, although that's long in the past.
The 5.3L would be very easy to modify, and current 5.3L engines are cheap to replace. |
A sign of the times vette
With $4 gas it's about time. I want one if they don't mess it up.

They have a scoop on a budget Corvette and at the same time release an article about a 600 HP Z06 and a 700 HP ZR1. Seem like a lot of projects for GM/Chevrolet to be trying to tackle when they don't even have the C7 in production yet. |
Did not read the article but fully expect something like that for the 2016 model year. I can easily see a 15% improvement in fuel economy at a time when it will be most needed. The reduction in CID and HP would mean not needing brakes, wheels and tires capable of sustaining 200 mile per hour speeds. If a fixed roof is part of the package, that too would be a cost savings. So I can see the reasoning behind such a story but suspect it is based more on the reasoning of why it could be done than on any actual info that it will be done.
