2015 Z/28 or 2017 1LE
 
I'm looking at buying a Z28 or a new 1LE. It looks as if the 1LE may be the better buy but I like the idea of the LS7 and Z28 just because its differant and not everyone has one. This will not be a daily driver or be raced. It will only be an occasional driven car. If anyone is out there that has been in the same situation as me please give me pros and cons and your final decision or if you have just researched it as well. Thanks in advance.

If you're not going to race, I would go with the 1LE. The Z/28 has little to no creature comforts (basically a v6 camaro interior with nice seats and less speakers) and is a track oriented machine. If you're not tracking, the 1LE will give you much more comfort and features at a lower price. I was at this crossroads early on and ended up with the 1LE. Very satisfied with my decision. I bought the Z/28 wheels for the track though.

It depends on what you want out of your Purchase.

Z/28 is more rare and collectable. The 1LE has already proven to be quicker on track with less sticky tires that last 3-4 times as long, not to mention all the modern comforts and amenities of a modern car. The trofeo R tires will need to be replaced often if you drive it with any regularity and if you put a lesser tire on the Z28 then the performance gap between the two increases.

So if you want a rare, cool, maybe future collectable or a dedicated track car get the Z28.

If you want the better all around drive and a car that can be a street/track car then get the 1LE

I spent 2 days driving a Z/28 and 1 day driving a new 1LE before making my final decision to get my 17 1LE. I loved the rawness of the car with the Z and its amazing handling, the lack of so called amenities didn't bother me.

Ultimately I decided on the 1LE for several reasons

1. Performance out the box is comparable to the Z28
2. I knew I wanted boost out of the box and the Z is a bit fragile (In hindsight so is my LT1 in terms of pistons) Thus my doing drop in pistons with my D1X setup and cam LOL
3. The 1LE was cheaper I bought mines in VA from Koons who gives the away pretty cheap and always has multiple cars in stock. 42k vs a nearly $47K sticker price was hard to ignore. Every Z I looked at was high $40's to low $50's

Plus I got a warranty and more amenities which was icing on the cake. I loved the Z and given some spare cash I will get one as a second toy with a HCI setup in the next year or two.

A big factor for me is the brakes. The 1LE iron brakes are every bit as capable as the carbon/ceramic parts on the Z28. They will hold up better to track use, and are far cheaper to replace.

If you don't track the car, the Z28 brakes will probably last forever, but they will require frequent maintenance for repeated track use.

I have nothing really more to add than what's been said above..

An occasionally driven non-tracked car? Personally, if it was going to be me and that's what it was going to do, I'd get the Gen5 Z/28.

For track and DD, I'd get the 1LE

for most all the same reasons listed above.

I had this same decision to make. I test drove both cars (a 2015 z28 with 550 miles and a new 1le). I decided to go with the 1le mainly because of future maintenance costs of the z28 ( the brake pads on the z28 are $1,000 to replace.) and the ability to daily drive the 1LE with out having to compromise comfort. I don't think I gave up any real world performance. The z28 wins hands down in the cool department.

44 year old perfect driving record

z28 inuramce was $2,400.00 dollars a year with all standard discounts.
2017 SS 1LE is $800.00


I don't regret my decision.

Z28 for the rarity. I have never liked the 5th gens that much either.

I have a lot of seat time in both on the street. I like the 17 SS 1LE better unless I wanted to modify the engine for, say, 600+hp N/A. The PFI LS7 is a basically a cam and headers (plus tune and injectors) from 600-630hp. My LS7 is my Firebird makes (well) over 700hp N/A on pump gas. What I'd really rather have is my 1LE with a LS7 and put a cam in it. I love how my Firebird and GTO sound at idle with aggressive cams in them. I'm keeping the 1LE under warranty, at least for the time being.

Had both already...Both are great cars

On the track and street they are almost equal..you can do a keyboard and internet battle for days,
The 1LE if you want the newer tech car with things PDR etc etc
The Z28 if you want the more rare ride with extra goodies like carbon brakes and semi slick tires

RESALE: Z28 for sure

I like the 1LE better for my taste

I second that. Given how rare the Z is, already at near 50% off MSRP, you have nothing but gain with that car as a toy/Sunday driver

I went with a new 17 1LE. I was able to snag one for right at 40k. I elected to save the $1300 and buy one without the recording system. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
