Unscheduled high speed disassembly today

Lost the Motor in my Z today. 1 to 2 gear change at about 6800 RPM. Looks like it lost a rod. Should know on Monday when they get it up in the air. Found a small piece of Aluminum and we have Anti-Freeze and just a little bit of oil.

Just hope I can keep the original motor when they decide what to do.

Already in the service bay at my favorite dealership.

Ouch !
How many miles on the car? I've done a few of those shifts along the way.
Keep us posted on what the failure ultimately was.

Sad day for sure !

The freaking cylinder walls are thin as an index card and you probably threw the rod right through it. Weird...the rods are supposedly very beefy. I bet it broke a rod bolt and in turn progressed to destroy whatever lay in its path. Look at ERL dry sleeve as an option for replacement. Since yours is a warranty claim, you will have to stick with a nice new LS7. BTW...I love AGM! Sorry about your misfortune...I am replacing my motor as we speak...almost done.

Sorry to hear that really sucks !! Were you speed shifting? Please keep us updated.

If only I had a dollar for every LS motor failure LS7, LS3 , L99 even my own stuck valve eating stock cam issue in LS3 and L99 with lifters going bad before trade. I would be Donald T. This is scarring the crap out of me.

Ouch, that's unfortunate! I hope things work out in your favor with the dealer.

It was a "Lift and Shift"...had 958 miles when I left the Garage.

I am OK with it. God had these things bolted together so we can fix them otherwise they would be welded.

Not sure what the ultimate failure is/was. Would love to be able to tear into it myself but it will be a warranty deal since there are no mods.

Last time I had a Motor loose a Rod was at the NHRA Nationals in Chicago. We had just finished up a new Motor and were trying a set of Tri-Y Headers. During the warm up it sounded funny but we thought it was new Headers. Did the burnout, staged the car and let the hammer out and pulled second gear at 10,000 RPM and bang. Thought I had lost the tranny. Turns out a Rocker broke on the exhaust side. Windowed the Block.

We took the motor to my Engine Builders buddy at Joe Gibbs racing. They CSI'ed it and found the Rocker was compromised when one of my crew was check Spring pressures and mis-positioned the Push Rod.

That motor had no warranty, no free tow to the dealer but we did have a spare bullet and were able to make a pass in the next round of qualifying. You can bet I'll be at the dealership Monday. Fortunately I went to High School with the Mechanic that will be working on it.

500 Inch Motor prior to unscheduled high speed disassembly...and after...

I hope you can be made whole. Seems to be two different thoughts on break in with performance cars, drive it like you stole it or by the recommended procedure. You might consider deleting this thread.

With Onstar and the Black they'll know pretty much what was going on. No hiding that.

Pretty much the first time it got wound up. I had just come through a double roundabout and got back on the highway in race mode. Pulled on to the frontage road and change to level 3. Left the stop sign pulled second while lifting and I thought the tranny let go. Message in the DIC was "Reduced Power".

Called my Sale guy and he and the "Hook" we're there within 15 minutes. I love my dealer. In 35 years of owning nothing but GM products they have never let me down.

I got 730 mile on mine baby it nothing past 4500 rpm

Quasimofo 08-09-2015 07:31 PM

I'm going by my standard routine. baby it for 50-100. Drive it "how you normally drive" for the next 5-900 depending. Change oil.

After the first oil change, do as you wish.

URBAN LEGEND 08-10-2015 06:33 AM

Will this be covered by warranty?

bptman 08-10-2015 11:14 AM

Sorry for your misfortune. I hope it is resolved quickly.
