What Is The Best High Torque Mini Starter???
 

I need to replace my OEM starter getting heat soaked on hot starts. I heard those high torque mini starters are the best at resisting heat so what is the BEST BRAND to get? Part number would be very helpful also.

While working at summit racing, I know Powernaster is a very well know quality brand. Don't know part numbers off hand but they are very reliable.

wow...that was a problem with the 2nd gens. Hard to believe it hasnt been addressed yet.

Happens sometimes on cars where exhaust or headers are modified, and runs just adjacent to the starter.
Factory has a heat shield in between at the yellow arrow in very bottom of picture below.

On my BBC drag car the only starter I have found over the years that survives is the Powermaster Ultra Torque. I think it's a 4.4 to 1 gear reduction. I've broke a few Tiltons, the Powermaster seems indestructible. Mine came with a dyno sheet too. You know you've got a mack daddy starter when it's been factory dynod. Mine turned 3.7 hp. They make several levels, the Ultra Tq series is the really good one.

Really good customer service too. I broke the pinion gear once, my mistake the starter timing retard wire had come out of the MSD box. So it tried to start at 42 deg advance. Broke the pinion gear. I sent it to Powermaster, they fixed it up for next to nothing and redyno'd it.

What's the part number for it? And is it smaller than OEM cause I could barely get the OEM started out last time.

Anybody have z experience??

Starter selection has nothing to do with thermal management.

I didn't ask about thermal management....:frown: I just want to see what people used and their experience

A less expensive alternative is to just cover you stock starter with a heat wrap like DEI. In most cases on a street car it's all you'd need. Another option is to use header wrap on the exhaust. Both are cheaper and easier to install than replacing the starter. See links below.

My wrapped my starter in heat blanket and it didn't do nothing. But it was after it started showing symptoms

A couple of the Powermaster LS starters are Part # 9009 and 9509. I think 9509 will be the higher tq.

Best to call their tech line and see what they recommend. They've always been very helpful when I call, and can tell you exactly which will work best for your application. 630-957-4019.

That's my point, barking up the wrong tree. You're going to waste money on new parts you don't need. It can also be a tune issue if you're tuned.
